The Job:

The Vice President of Human Resources leads all aspects of Human Resources for Roehl Transport and related businesses. The VPHR is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and reports to the CEO. This position is the catalyst of strategic business priorities for talent acquisition and talent management which is the key driver of our growth. A primary focus for the role is to attract, engage, develop and retain high performing talent.

The VPHR ensures the department reflects the service, solutioning, and support of a highly effective supporting function to the business operations. The sub-departments of the overall HR department are the Driver Employment Center, Employment (non-driving jobs), Training and Driver Development, Employee Relations, Communications, and a “dotted line” to Pay and Benefits Services. Overall HR department staff is 100+.

What You Do:
  • Work closely with the CEO and the executive team to develop and execute human resources strategies and consistent HR processes that effectively meet, support and enhance business objectives.
    • Maintain open communications with leaders across the company to assess the needs of their departments / divisions and help them accomplish business objectives by recommending human resources solutions and measures.
    • Establish credibility throughout the organization to be an effective listener and problem solver of people issues.
  • Proactively lead the development and implementation of corporate human resources policies, procedures, programs, and practices that are aligned with business objectives and support the business operations while being in compliance with local, state and federal employment laws and competitive employment practices.
    • Manage Human Resources staff and plan, develop, recommend, and implement Human Resources activities, policies, procedures, and programs.
    • Manage activities relating to employee relations, labor law compliance, recruiting, training and development, benefits administration and payroll.
    • Hire, train, evaluate and manage employee performance, and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and wage actions within HR department.
    • Prepare and analyze department budget to identify budget needs and/or reductions.
  • Establishes, implements and maintains best in class talent acquisition, talent development and talent management systems, structures and processes through the DEC, Employment and Training and Driver Development functions of the department.
  • Develops implements and manages internal communications to keep employees informed and aware across the full spectrum of HR services and company operations.
  • Participate in the design and management of competitive compensation and workforce planning strategies. Ensure that these programs enhance the company’s abilities to meet objectives and attract and retain a skilled and effective workforce.
    • Participate in compensation and benefit surveys and/or conduct wage survey within labor market to determine competitive wage rate and remain apprised of current trends.
    • Continually assess the competitiveness of all programs and practices against the relevant comparable companies, industries and markets.
  • Implement and maintain an effective succession plan, including management development and employee career path programs appropriate for supporting and sustaining the company’s development.
  • Is the company’s lead interface with legal representation for employment related legal issues. Represent company at employment related hearings, investigations and negotiations. Monitor and mitigate legal costs.
  • Keep current on HR topics to stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices.

  • BS/BA required preferably in Human Resources or related field, Masters preferred.
  • 10 – 12 years of progressive HR management experience including 5 – 7  years as a senior HR Leader. Experience in the truckload-transportation industry is highly desirable. 
  • Advanced HR certification (i.e. SPHR) preferred.
  • Broad exposure to all Human Resources functions, including culture development, change management, recruiting, employee retention, workforce planning, organization development, compensation, benefits, training, HRIS and administration, and multi-site experience.
  • Computer skills, including basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Occasional travel required.
